| | | THE BIG CHILL. Cold red wine always had a kind of groovy, Felliniesque cachet to it, and now an Italian winemaker has crossed the line and produced a red designed specifically to drink chilled. Made from Nero di Troia grapes, Alberto Longo's Rossofreddo is a big hit in the Old Country, where some daring drinkers even enjoy it with a slice of fresh peach. | | | The Wine Front. This Alticelli Fiano was presented at a session on climate change run by the Rutherglen winemakers’ group - fiano is famed for holding its acidity in hot conditions. I would not cellar this but I’d definitely drink it - this wine is right up my alley. It smells great. Grassy, shelly, briney and rubbery, with back-up flavours of riverstones and slate. | Super dry and super food friendly. Nice finish. Dry, slatey length. I just love wines like this. Love the dry, acidic, complexity here. More length than you might expect too. The price is very fair. ROSSO POMODORO. Seasonality can be a tough mistress. Tomatoes are a great example. The foundation of so many Italian dishes (especially those from the south), they're just not great fresh in the colder months. Generations of Italian families have gotten around this by making hay while the sun shines, and bottling as | much sugo - the basic tomato pasta sauce - and as many tomatoes as they can manage while they're still good...Antica Enotria's jars of organic cherry tomatoes from Puglia are sweet enough for a 'fresh' tomato sauce, even in the depth of winter.
